Summer is Book Buzz Season!

Summer Reading Builds Strong Readers, Strong Families and Strong Communities

Summer is one of the most important seasons for building a lifelong love of reading. While school may be out, learning should never take a vacation. For many children, reading just 15–20 minutes a day during the summer helps maintain literacy skills, strengthens vocabulary, and prepares them to return to school with confidence. In the Black community, where books can inspire pride, identity and achievement, summer reading is more than an educational activity—it is an investment in our children's future and a celebration of our rich stories, voices and history.

Whether it's a toddler enjoying a colorful board book, an elementary student discovering a new adventure, a teen exploring Black history or an adult reconnecting with the joy of reading, books create opportunities for meaningful conversations across generations. Reading together at home, in the park, at the library, or on vacation creates memories while reinforcing the importance of learning every day of the year.
